Don’t overlook this easy-to-implement, no-cost way to drive qualified traffic

 

Let’s face it….Google Adwords is time consuming but many of us have to do it or we’ll get lost in the pay-per-click shuffle. Whenever Google makes a significant change, it’s critical that advertisers pay attention and adjust their sails to stay on course.

Just recently, Google tweaked the formula for calculating Ad Rank by adding a new factor, ad extensions.

Most savvy advertisers have long been using ad extensions to increase their click- through-rate and to better qualify their searcher however now it’s no longer an option.

If you choose to ignore this change you may start to see your competitors bumping you out of position even with a high quality score and competitive bid. For those who are new to Adwords advertising, ad extensions will only appear in the top 3 paid ad positions on the Google search results page and are listed as separate links below your standard text ad.

Here’s the good news, ad extensions have a minimal set-up time and there is no additional cost when they are displayed. To get started, visit the ad extension tab and you’ll see a drop-down menu listing all the available options.

Here is a breakdown of some of the most widely used ad extensions:

  •  Location Extensions- Help your customers find your location by displaying a map with your business location(s)
  • Call Extensions- set up a click to call option to show with your ad so mobile searchers can easily contact you by clicking a button and/or you can set up a call extension so that your phone number appears below your ad.
  • Site link extensions- Link to additional pages within your site
  • Social Extensions- Connect +1s from your Google Plus page to your ad (and vice-versa)
  • App Extensions- Show a link to your mobile or tablet app directly below your ad

Advertisers also have the option of setting up extensions at the ad group level, giving you more control over how they display.

The bottom line is ad extensions increase click-through-rates and Google is going to show ads that bring more clicks. After all, that is how Google gets paid.

As with all things with Adwords advertising, it’s critically important to track the performance of your ad extensions. Success depends on knowing what works and what doesn’t
